The Prefect Role
The role of Prefect is an important one, and if appointed, students will be accepting a position of considerable responsibility. It is also very exciting, and it will give students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and significantly influence the daily life of the school. As such, prefects are expected to perform many roles, some of which are listed below.
- Provide a positive role model to which other students should aspire.
- Meet and maintain the highest standards of courtesy, uniform, appearance, attendance and punctuality.
- Represent the school at important events throughout the year. Open Evening, for example, is a critical event in the school calendar and all prefects are expected to attend to help as guides on this evening. Importantly, our year 7 induction days require prefects to commit additional time when other students might not be in school to support our younger students. A number of prefects also need to assist with transitional events during an INSET day.
- Help to lead promotional activities for the school, including charity events.
- Carry out regular duties at lunch and break time as and when required
- Be proactive in assisting the smooth running of the school outside lesson times.
- Greet visitors for daytime meetings in the school e.g. Open Mornings
- To act as a supportive role model to an allocated lower school tutor group and assist the form tutor with the delivery of registration time activities on allocated days.
- Act as a buddy to students who have asked for help and support.
- Aid various staff, including heads of year, Stage 2, and Learning Support. This could include helping with administrative tasks, supporting students, and liaising with other staff.
Students applying to be a prefect should demonstrate:
- They are a positive role model to other students regarding Attitude to Learning, conduct and commitment to our expectations
- High levels of maturity and initiative
- Their excellent record of attendance and punctuality
- They are enthusiastic and highly motivated
- Their commitment and contributions to the wider life of the school and the ability to carry out the role
- They have good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
Once appointed, prefects are subject to regular review and must ensure that they maintain our highest expectations to retain their prefect status.
