Dear parent/carer,
We’d like to share an update about our IT services and iPads and remind everyone of the steps we take to help keep students safe and responsible when using technology. We’ve also included some information about using iPads at home.
Our IT Policy and Expectations
- Use of our systems is subject to our Acceptable Use Policy when using school devices or accessing school systems.
- This includes using technology responsibly and respectfully, and primarily as an educational device. We have recently updated our policy to include information about the use of AI for learning.
- Students are reminded regularly about appropriate online behaviour, protecting personal information, and reporting any concerns to a teacher or member of staff.
- We ask students to look after their iPads; the fewer repair claims we receive, the better, as this keeps our scheme cheaper for everyone.
Filtering and Monitoring in School
- Internet access in school is filtered and monitored through our Opendium system, which blocks inappropriate or unsafe websites and records internet activity to help safeguard students.
- Our Jamf Pro system prevents users from installing apps depending on their age rating.
Filtering and Safety at Home
While our systems protect students on school networks and on school devices, we encourage parents to apply similar protections at home.
- Most broadband providers (including BT, Sky, Virgin, and TalkTalk) offer free parental controls or filtering options that can be enabled in your account settings.
- The UK Safer Internet Centre has a helpful ‘Parents Guide to Technology’ with advice on safe and responsible use of phones, consoles and other devices.
- If you or your child is concerned about something you have seen online outside of school, you can report it by clicking this link.
Introducing Jamf Parent
Parents of students with school iPads can also use the Jamf Parent app to help manage device use at home.
- Jamf Parent allows you to pause internet access, limit app use, and set time restrictions when the iPad is not connected to the school network.
- To set this up, you need to pair your phone with your child’s school iPad:
- On your phone, download Jamf Parent from the Apple App / Google Play Store.
- On your child’s iPad, open the Self Service app and tap the QR code button in the upper-right corner of the app.
- On your phone, open Jamf Parent and tap Get Started. Scan the QR code on your child’s device and tap Confirm
- Use the menu to allow or block different apps and set time restrictions.
A more detailed guide can be found here: https://learn.jamf.com/en-US/bundle/jamf-parent-guide-for-parents/page/Using_Jamf_Parent_to_Manage_a_Childs_Device_Paired_via_Self_Service_iOS_and_iPadOS.html
Please note these restrictions only apply during out-of-school hours.
