External Agencies Week

Every September, we host our External Agencies Week, where several organisations are invited to present to students.

On Monday, Performance in Education and their funky characters performed ‘Streetwise’ – a story about how three friends completing surveys in their local town ended in a near-fatal tragedy. The performance explored risk, responsibility, and consequences as a pedestrian.

We also had MHST who spoke to students about their mental health, where to get help, and how to support each other – accompanied by their alien friends!

Hello to the next generation!

On Tuesday, we met the next generation of Haslingden High School and Sixth Form students!

Students from across the Valley met their potential future teachers, tried subjects they have never done before, and got to meet their future best friends!

Following the Taster Day, we welcomed parents to explore the school corridors and see what life at Haslingden is like.

Celebrating difference

As part of the induction process in Year 7, we held an Equality and Diversity Day. Throughout the day, we covered topics such as prejudice and discrimination, human rights, challenging social injustice, and why different languages exist. This schedule was designed to give a broad insight into why discrimination exists and what they can do as individuals to challenge these sorts of issues. We hope the messages from the day stay with them throughout their life, and they grow up to be caring, responsible citizens equipped for life in the 21st century.

The day ended with a Bollywood dance class. It’s an annual tradition at Haslingden High School and Sixth Form, arranged by Assistant Headteacher Mrs Powell. Our Sixth Form Leadership Team supported with this (Mariyam Nawaz, Aamna Khan, Macey – Jane Hartley). The session was expertly led by Neetal Parekh, who works alongside the wider Lancashire Equality & Diversity Team.

Extended Project Qualifications

Each year, Mr Wood supports several students in achieving an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). It involves a 5,000-word essay on a subject of their choice and a 20-minute presentation in front of staff. It’s no easy feat, so a huge well done to everyone involved.

  • Amy did hers on ‘The Enfield Poltergeist’
  • Morné did his on ‘1984 and contemporary politics’
  • Isobel did hers on ‘The Enhanced Games’
  • Sabine did hers on ‘Manuka honey as a natural remedy’
  • Aiden did his on ‘Psychology of drone warfare’
  • Hafsa did hers on ‘Racial bias in AI’

Very interesting stuff!

If you are interested in doing an EPQ in Year 13 to broaden your post-18 choices (it’s an extra qualification to add to your CV!), speak to Mr Wood for more information.
