This week is National Careers Week, and we have had a host of exciting activities on this week to help broaden horizons for our students.

Students had the chance to ask important questions about their future options, and exhibitors were able to broaden prospects with their expert knowledge.
Thank you to our exhibitors for offering your time.

UCAS Discovery
Year 12 headed to Manchester Central this week to attend the UCAS Discovery event.
Representatives from over 150 universities, apprenticeship providers, and major employers gathered to provide information on post-18 options.
We hope our sixth form students have gained a better understanding of what their future could look like.
At Haslingden Sixth Form, we provide a range of different support to make sure you feel confident in your post-18 choices, and so you never feel like you are on your own with one of the biggest decisions you make in your teenage years.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet set within the world of the Titanic
Year 12 and 13 English Literature students headed to Bradford yesterday to visit the Alhambra theatre.
They watched The Royal Shakespeare Company’s new production of Hamlet, which is set aboard a sinking ocean liner, reminiscent of the Titanic.
The impressive set tilts with projections of the ocean, creating an eerie sense of impending doom.
The themes of vanity and arrogance run through the rendition of Hamlet, and strongly link to the happenings of the Titanic.

Ready… Set… Bake!
Every year, we host a cake decorating contest to celebrate World Book Day.
Students are encouraged to recreate their favourite book cover, replicate a character, or make something that represents their love of reading.
225 students and staff members voted for their favourites.

Students help to raise £10,000 for Rossendale Hospice
Yesterday evening, we were delighted to welcome six local schools to celebrate their achievements at the Rossendale Hospice’s Youth Enterprise Celebration Event.
The Haslingden Youth Enterprise Group has worked very hard to raise as much money as possible for the charity, and was glad to take away the Fundraisers’ Achievement Award.
Well done to fellow schools, BRGS, Alder Grange, VLA, and Whitworth for their efforts.

Going for Gold
Rubie in Year 8 has achieved Gold in the ‘Go for Gold ‘ reading challenge. She has read and reviewed thirty books since beginning Year 7 at HHS – an amazing achievement! She has already started on her journey towards Platinum. Well done, Rubie!

Snakes and dragons and snails… oh my!
It’s #BritishScienceWeek next week, and to celebrate all things Biology, our Animal Club welcomed in some special guests.
Zoo2U and Holmes Chapel Zoo kindly brought some unusual and wonderful creatures into our Biology Lab. Including Drake the Snake and George the Bearded Dragon.
The students were fascinated by the creatures, asking questions about their anatomy and behaviour… and whether they could take them home!
Safe to say, all of the animals made it back to the zoo.
Biology is the study of life, and experiences like these truly bring the subject to life, making a lasting impact on our students’ learning.
