Year 7 students celebrated equality and diversity with a day packed full of events.
In 2023, Rossendale’s largest high school and Sixth Form became the first in Rossendale and, at that time, only the fourth in Lancashire, to achieve the Lancashire Equality Mark.
Assistant Headteacher Mrs Powell led the school to achieve the standard and organised the Equality and Diversity Day with our new Year 7 students.
“We believe this is a really important part of our induction programme for Year 7 as it establishes our expectations with regard to the importance of showing respect for all members of our community regardless of background. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school and continue to work hard to ensure that all students and staff feel safe, secure and welcome.” – Mrs Powell
The day started with an assembly which highlighted the importance of challenging all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Students were told that, although it might be difficult at times, even one individual can make a difference if they are willing to speak up for those who are more vulnerable.
Lessons considered human rights and the rights of the child, challenging stereotypes as well as exploring the many different languages spoken within Haslingden High School and Sixth Form to celebrate the diversity of the community.
“In PE, students also took the opportunity to explore how sport can be a positive way to break down barriers or stereotypes. Students played seated volleyball and considered how netball can connect people
from different cultures and communities. They also challenged gender stereotypes in football.” – Mrs Powell
The day ended with a spectacular Bollywood Dance Workshop led by Neetal Parekh from the Lancashire Equality and Diversity Team in the Sixth Form Theatre. It was attended by the whole of Year 7.
