She will spend a month in the country, experiencing a range of different activities including, walking, camping, watersports, climbing and mountain biking.
The Haslingden High School Year 10 student said: “I have been in the Army Cadets for almost three years now. My dad is an ex-Marine and my sister had joined the cadets.
“I was struggling to decide what things to do in school and outside and my dad said give it a go.”
She found her niche and becoming a cadet has opened up a whole world of opportunities for her.
Millie was selected to represent the cadets nationally at climbing and was north-west champion in swimming.
This stood her in good stead when she went for the two-day test to get a place on the team representing the UK on the exchange programme with Canada.
She said: “Of the 40,000, 60 were selected to take part in the two-day selection process in Wales, and only 20 got places on the team.”
Millie has just turned 15 making her eligible for the trip on July 11 and will also be the youngest person representing the cadets.
She said: “I didn’t expect to get picked, because a lot of the candidates were older and as you can only be in cadets to 18, I thought older members would get selected first for the team.
“I enjoyed the expedition. We had to do climbing which I love, first aid and show good communication skills.
“I think I got picked because I am a good swimmer and I also have good communication skills. My sister is jealous that I have been picked.
“Cadets is different and it gives you more opportunities than you would normally get. It is not just a hobby. On camps I have met cadets from Ireland and Germany; I don’t think I would have had those opportunities with other clubs or interests.”
Millie’s sister Cassie, 17, is also a former Haslingden High School student and, along with Millie, has been on a camp with the cadets to Germany.
Cassie is at college and also works as a lifeguard in Burnley. While at Haslingden High she was selected for the Tall Ships race and her goal is to join the Navy.
Millie wants to join the army and is looking at possibly staying on at Haslingden Sixth Form or applying for a place in the Army College at Harrogate.
