Year 10s win Rossendale Cup while U16s just miss out

FOOTBALLING U16 boys from Haslingden High School just missed out on Lancashire and local cup glory, but the Year 10 side claimed the Rossendale title.

The Y16s’ side played in the Lancashire Cup at Darwen Football Club’s Anchor Ground in a re-run of the semi-final they had played a week earlier against Morecambe Bay Academy, when their opposition fielded an ineligible player.

Oscar Edmondson, 16, said: “It was a very good game and we initially went 2-1 up but at half-time it was 4-2 to Morecambe.”

Sam Burns, 16, said: “They then scored again so it was 5-2, but we had lots of support and we could hear cheering and shouting.”

Oscar said: “We got our third and fourth goal in the last few minutes and we thought we might have a chance. Then we had a ball go just past the post.”

The team lost out to Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School at Bacup Borough Football Club in the Rossendale Cup final but on the same night the Haslingden High School Year 10 boys claimed the Rossendale title after defeating Alder Grange 8-3 after making an outstanding comeback.

Oscar and Sam play for Bury Rangers and Sam Gammack plays for Lancashire County and is on trials for Fylde; other players play for grassroots sides.

After GCSEs, both Sam and Oscar will be going to Burnley College where they hope to get into the college football team.
