Poets pen prose for national anthology

TALENTED Year 7s from Haslingden High School have had their poetry selected for a national anthology entitled ‘Empowered’.

Young Writers invited entries from students aged 11 to 18 and English teacher Maria McLoughlin was delighted to find out that 45 entries from the school had been accepted for publication.

Chloe Sheridan, 12, was one of the successful poets.

She said: “My English teacher had been doing a topic on Empowerment in English and at the end of it she asked students to write our own poem about how to empower ourselves.

“I had been off with Covid when the topic was covered and came back in on the Friday when she asked us to write the poem.

“In primary school I always loved writing poems. My poem was called ‘This Is Me’ and it is about nobody telling me that I couldn’t be anybody but myself. I then just talk about my flaws, but say that they don’t matter.”

Chloe was delighted to receive a letter saying her poem was to be included in the anthology, which will be published in June.

She said: “I was really excited to tell my mum and dad and my grandparents were really proud of me.

“I have always liked reading in primary school but this will be the first time I have had anything printed.”
