Stress Awareness Day: How to get through Bonfire Night

Stress Awareness Day highlights the importance of looking after our wellbeing – both mental and physical.

This year, Stress Awareness Day happens to fall on Bonfire Night on Wednesday, 5th November 2025.

The sudden bangs, bright lights, and strong smells can be stressful for people with sensory sensitivities, PTSD, or for those with pets.

Here are some tips on how to navigate the evening more comfortably.

How can I plan a stress-free Bonfire Night?

  1. Plan ahead – Be aware of what days firework displays are likely to happen. If you have someone in your household who may struggle, let them know what to expect.
  2. Keep it lowkey – If you still want to enjoy the night without the crowds, supervised use of sparklers or glowsticks in the garden is a good option.
  3. Have distractions – If you’re staying at home, keep yourself busy with an activity, like watching a film, crafting, or cooking.
  4. Watch from afar – If you like to watch fireworks but don’t like hearing them, driving further away and higher up from town centres can be a great way to watch firework displays without the noise.

What methods can I use to reduce stress on Bonfire Night?

  1. Address your senses – Smell essential oils, feel something soft, taste something sour, listen to something relaxing, watch something calming.
  2. Stay present – Focus on your breathing if you feel overwhelmed.
  3. Talk it through – Tell someone close to you that you are experiencing stress. A problem shared is a problem halved.
  4.  Wear headphones or play music aloudClassical music can help calm nerves for both people and pets during noisy firework displays. Noise-cancelling headphones are also a great option.

Where can I find help to manage my stress?

  1. Find support for stress from local or national charities such as Mind, the Mental Health Foundation, and Young Minds.
  2. Speak to peers, teachers, and parents/carers.
  3. Speak to your GP.
  4. Join a school club – Participating in a sports or activity club can reduce stress by giving you something to focus on. Explore our extra-curricular activities here.

What is HHS Mindfulness Club?

During Form time, Mrs Connor hosts the Mindfulness Club. The aim of the club is to give students the tools they need to start the day feeling relaxed and to help them manage their emotions throughout the day. It’s an educational and supportive space that offers practical tips and advice, as well as the opportunity for students to share their own experiences if they wish. Students can ask their form tutor for more information if they would like to join.
