Drama achieves new grades

Seven LAMDA students successfully completed their grade 4 and 5 acting exams in Manchester last weekend, despite battling sore throats and colds.

They have all worked really hard on their exam pieces, and to celebrate their achievements, Miss Anthony hosted a showcase for friends and family.

They each performed a monologue on different topics, and the level of professionalism was impressive to see!

We remember

This week, we marked Remembrance Day with a ceremony in our HHS Remembrance Garden.

Over the past few weeks, A Level Art students and some lower school volunteers have been working on revamping the artwork in the garden, while Mrs Tembo’s Ceramics Club have been working on making 100 clay poppies for students to display in the garden. A few other volunteers have been doing some gardening and upkeep in their free time.

The ceremony, led by Ms Southee, saw several students reading poems, followed by our student cadets laying wreaths by our memorial painting. We also had a student play The Last Post, which added a beautiful touch to the moment.

We would also like to share a special thank you to our Poppy Appeal volunteers, who dedicated their break and lunch times to selling poppies to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

University Challenge

It’s that time of year again! Students were ‘buzzers at the ready’ for the first round of the annual Haslingden Sixth Form University Challenge.

Four teams took part in TV’s toughest quiz team tournament this week, hosted by Mr Wood and Mrs Taylor.

Heat 1 saw Music vs Law – with Law coming out on top with a score of 240.

Heat 2 saw DT vs Film Studies – with Film Studies taking the win with a score of 275.

The next round will be on Tuesday, where RS will take Biology, and English will take Geography.

Power For Good

This week was Anti-Bullying Week, and to acknowledge the week, we held assemblies on the topic of being kind to one another.

The theme was ’Power for Good’ and we’d like to encourage all students to speak up and bring awareness when they see bullying – in person or online.

Taste of sixth form life

Many of our students are keen to experience what life at sixth form is like before the end of their time at high school, and so this year, we wanted to try something different for our Year 11 taster experience.

All this week, we have organised taster days around our existing timetable, so students can sit in on real classes with our current Year 12 and 13 students.

This gives our students a taste of what a ‘normal’ day at sixth form is like.

“I found the lesson to be very helpful. It was a big shock to see the change in standard from GCSE to A Level, but I took into account that I joined a class that was 10 weeks deep into a course. Overall, it was a very helpful double period.” – Year 11 student

We are now taking applications for those considering A Level and vocational subjects as their next steps. Students can speak to their form tutor for more information. If you are interested in joining our community from another school, please click here.

Vocab recap in German

Year 9 have been preparing for and completing assessments in German, and to break up the studying, they have been taking part in a ‘one pen one dice’ activity to help them recall vocabulary.

This involves one person translating their list and then rolling the dice until they get a 6. Then, they must stop translating and give up the pen. Repeating until their list is complete.

Other German classes have been learning about ‘Martinstag’ and how the German people celebrate the life of Saint Martin on 11th November, with children carrying lanterns in a parade.
