Fleas and flying objects

This week, our clubs have made some amazing efforts to develop their learning. Here’s what has been happening…

A taste of student life

We hosted our second round of ‘Step Into Sixth’ this week. Much like our usual taster days, Step Into Sixth gives students a taste of what an actual day at sixth form is like.

However, the students sit in existing Year 12 and 13 lessons, have free periods, and guided study sessions.

The aim is to make sure our students get the full experience before making one of the most important choices in their teenage years.

Top Table

In addition to trying a new approach to our taster days, we also wanted to hear directly from students about what positive changes we can make to improve the sixth form experience and address any worries they have about their post-16 choices.

As part of this, we invited a group of Year 11 students to share their thoughts.

Thank you for taking part. Your opinions are incredibly important to us.

We have fleas!

This week in Animal Club, the group had the microscopes out to investigate our colony of fascinating water fleas, AKA Daphnia Pulex.
The students carefully viewed the mini crustaceans under the microscopes, and then returned them to our colony.

Taking flight

In Science Club this week, the group designed, tested, and modified unusual aircrafts, before competing to find the one which would travel the furthest.

The group tested different shapes and sizes and had great fun watching their creations take flight.

Celebrating 50 years through art

As part of our anniversary celebrations, selected artworks will be showcased in a dedicated gallery at The Golden Gig.

To build the display, we’d like to encourage students and members of our community to enter our art competition.

The task is to create a piece of art – a painting, photography, craft, mixed media, whatever you prefer – that represents the school site. That could be something nostalgic, contemporary, personal, or abstract; the choice is yours.

*Clearly label your artwork with your name, email, and phone number and drop it off at our Main Reception.

*Artwork may be collected at the end of the event or by arrangement during the following week.

*Only unframed work, please.

Important funds for our local hospice

This week, our Youth Enterprise Group have been working hard to organise a bake sale in aid of Rossendale Hospice.

Staying back late on Tuesday night, they baked enough treats to fill three tables the next day.

The bakes sold out in just four minutes, raising £157!

Well done to the team for organising this.

Worthy nominee for Assistant Library Assistant of the Year

TJ was nominated for the prestigious CILIP/SLA Pupil Library Assistant of the Year Award. Despite not winning on this occasion, TJ was named a ‘worthy nominee’. It was the first time we have ever nominated one of our student Library Assistants.

“TJ is a bit of a book guru and is always on hand to give recommendations for reading to all who ask, and I have called upon her to share her favourite readers with younger pupils as well as her peers.” – Ms Choudry
