Mindfulness on tour, a trip to the pictures, and football champions

Trip to the pictures

A Level French students visited Manchester’s HOME Cinema this week to attend a lecture about, and then watch, the film L’Histoire de Souleymane. They then participated in some film analysis workshops.

A Level Film Studies also paid a visit to the cinema to watch Hitchcock’s Vertigo, followed by a lecture delivered by Dr Victoria Low, Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

HOME is a charity-run cinema and theatre that collaborates with creatives from around the world to present educational visual art experiences coupled with lectures.

Final rehearsals before the big show

The cast of The Witches has been working hard to polish their performances ahead of the show next week. There will be performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week, so if you haven’t already, be sure to grab your tickets from Main Reception… This one is not to be missed!

Fish Heroes in Food Tech

This week, we received an order of 10kg of fresh mussels for students to dish up and try.

Our school was selected to take part in the Fish Heroes programme, which celebrates sustainable seafood and healthy eating.

As part of this project, we received a free delivery of fresh, rope-grown mussels from Offshore Shellfish, one of the UK’s leading sustainable mussel farms.

Food Tech lessons had a cooking demonstration using the mussels to make exciting new dishes, and Mrs Theaker hosted an after-school masterclass.

It was a great opportunity for students to try something new, develop practical cooking skills, and learn about where our seafood comes from.

Thanks to Offshore Shellfish, Food Teachers Centre UK, Fishmongerscom and the #FishHeroes programme for selecting us.

Mindfulness Club go on tour

Mindfulness Club has been going on tour, visiting several form groups during registration to teach other students about the importance of taking a moment to relax.

In Miss Anthony’s 7E class, Bloss and Sophie taught fellow students how to ‘tap out the bad, squeeze in the good’. This method includes thinking about what is frustrating you at the moment while tapping your hand, and then saying positive affirmations while lightly squeezing each finger.

Mindfulness Club meets every form time; students can ask their form tutor which day they can attend.

Getting in the festive spirit

The school band visited assemblies this week, with Mr Gibbs leading a presentation on why the arts are so important.

The performance was a taste of what to expect at the greatly anticipated Christmas Concert, which will be taking place on Tuesday, 16th December.

Tickets can be purchased from Main Reception.

Teddy bears made of socks

Miss Holian’s new Textiles class has been a huge hit with Year 8.

Students in Design and Technology have been busy turning simple socks into amazing sock bears, and their creativity has been incredible.

The countdown to Christmas is on

The HHS Library has launched its Advent calendar, and each day, a student opens the door to reveal a festive activity or book recommendation inside.

Match report by Mr Hargreaves

“On Wednesday afternoon, Haslingden Sixth Form footballers played at home against their opposite numbers from Ripley and St Thomas of Lancaster. This was a Lancashire Schools Football Association U19s League fixture.

The game kicked off later than planned at 14:00, the opposition were waylaid on their journey from Lancaster as a result the lads had to settle for 35 minutes each way. The HHS lads began the game playing with confidence and energy, despite having the disadvantage of playing up the slope. 6 minutes and 35 seconds into the first 35 Rafi McDonald made the breakthrough, scoring a left-footed screamer from the left side of the box, which beat their keeper’s best efforts to keep it out.

Although HHS controlled the remainder of the first-half we couldn’t capitalise on the chances created.

In the second-half following a breakaway attempt that Ripley should’ve converted to draw level, Rafi had a hand or rather a foot in making the game safe. His parried shot was horrendously sliced by Ripley’s left-back into his own goal. Although HHS conceded via the penalty spot the outcome of the game was never really in doubt and this was underlined when Jack Stubbs and Noah Lewis added the third and fourth goals rounding off what was a very accomplished all-round team performance.

This victory maintains HHS’ 100% record for the season so far, upcoming fixtures are Rossall in the League and St Christopher’s in the Cup.”

Visit from top university

Year 10 and Year 12 got the chance to meet Molly, Outreach for Lancashire from The Queen’s College, part of Oxford University.

The session walked the students through life as a student, the application process, and what students can be doing at this point to build ‘supercurricular’ activities.
