This week’s round-up is a long one! Here is what has been going on this week…
Passion projects in Future Leaders session
Haslingden Sixth Form offers an exclusive additional qualification for all Year 12 students called Future Leaders. It’s a personal development programme that gives students opportunities that they would not usually have to grow in confidence.
In this week’s session, students brought in an item (or a photo) that they are passionate about and delivered a speech accordingly.
There was a wide range of items on show, and it was great to hear about what is special to our students.

365-day streak for Safiya
Safiya, Year 8 and member of the Duolingo Club, has scored a whopping 365-day streak on the Duolingo languages app!
The app features built-in language lessons that, when practised daily, support language learning anywhere and at any time.
Consistency is key! Well done, Safiya.

Feeling festive in Duolingo Club
Duolingo Club have been testing their language skills this week, as Andy, Year 9, organised a winter-themed challenge for the club to complete.
Assisted by Andrea in Year 7, the club had to work through the Duolingo app to earn enough points to help the in-app character, Junior, get ready for the Christmas markets. Each level equalled a certain item, and they all had to work together to reach the target.
Well done to Andy and Andrea for delivering your activity in the club this week!

Go for Gold
Ava, Year 9, has achieved the ultimate Platinum Award in the Go for Gold reading challenge!
This is the reading reward scheme for our students in Key Stage 3. Students read and review books that they are currently reading (outside of Sparx Reader homework) to challenge themselves, as part of our ‘reading for pleasure’ initiative.
Since joining us in Year 7, Ava has read and reviewed 50 books to achieve Platinum! She has been rewarded with a gift voucher and a special Top Reader badge to wear with pride.

Attendance Champions
Our students have been taking part in the HHS Attendance Championships over the last few months, and this week we rewarded the students who entered a competition to name the form mascots.
- The Year 7 axolotyl is now named Athena
- The Year 8 capybara is now named Cathy
- The Year 9 hedgehog is now named Cinnamon
- The Year 10 monkey is now named Nikki
- And the Year 11 turtle is now named Raphael
We also held a non-uniform day for the winners of the 100% Club challenge.
AND we launched a new weekly initiative where 100% attendance winners of the week will receive a Ninja Coffee treat for their amazing attendance.
Show up to level up!
If you feel your child could benefit from some support with their attendance, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

PSHE Ambassadors
Last week, we shared an update on the group of lower school students who were nominated to be a part of the PSHE Ambassador committee.
This week, we welcomed Year 10 to the committee, with over 15 students in attendance who were nominated by their teachers.
The group brought a whole different approach to the focus group, sharing their experience of PSHE over the four years they have been with us, what they have thought of the tools and programmes they have used, and suggested improvements for the future.
Great work, everyone.

Giving rugby a try
This week, we welcomed TryIt rugby coaches into several PE lessons so that students could try out rugby.
Students learnt about the rules of the game and have grown in confidence as their skills have developed.
They’ve been having a lot of fun trying something new, and we’d like to share a big thank you to the coaches for working with us.

Sixth form visit to Haslingden Hall
Our Year 12 CTEC Health and Social Care students visited Haslingden Hall Care Home today, where they spent time getting to know the residents and enjoying games together. They were given a tour of the setting and had the opportunity to see their classroom learning brought to life: from health and safety procedures to delivering a person-centred approach.

Up Learn
This week, the sixth form students studying Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and/or Economics got to try our brand new revision platform, Up Learn.
Up Learn is a tool that has been created by professionals and run by AI, designed to help fill in any gaps in revision and boost overall exam grades.
We are currently trialling the effectiveness of this platform for use in future years, but we are already receiving great feedback from both students and teachers.
