Challenges and debates

Pushing through challenges, debating important topics, and plenty of sweet treats – that’s what’s been happening this week!

Testing their debating skills…

Year 13 Psychology students have been debating gender bias for their Issues and Debates topic this week.

They were given the topic title of ‘Gender bias negatively affects men more than women’ and, in pairs, students debated for or against the notion, using detailed research and statistics.

By the end of class, they considered how gender bias can be observed in Psychology Theory and Research through its impact on society, including the legal system, employment, and education.

“I’m incredibly proud of how well students articulated their arguments to consider both sides of the debate and thoroughly enjoyed the class discussion that took place as a result!” – Ms Tilley, Psychology Teacher

You can always ‘Find a Way’

Mr Goodman hosted an assembly themed on challenges this week and how it is always possible to ‘Find a Way’ around obstacles to encourage students to always try their best.

He spoke about how he doesn’t like going for blood tests, Mrs Nixon doesn’t like the dentist, and Mrs Jeffrey doesn’t like heights… but they all have found a way to get through the task they have to do.

Methods such as taking a deep breath, imagining a ‘happy place’, and asking for support were recommended to get through undesirable situations.

We hope the students felt motivated at the end of assembly!

The Shawshank Redemption

On Tuesday, Year 13 Theatre Studies students accompanied Mr Anderson, Mrs Brady, and Mr Albiston at HOME cinema to see a theatrical version of the much-acclaimed film: ‘The Shawshank Redemption’.

“The stage was very cleverly manipulated to become a variety of locations within the prison – including the warden’s luxurious office and the roof of the cell block. The acting was first-rate and the students were completely hooked into the story of the innocent man, Andy Dusfrane, and his growing friendship with the ageing long-timer, Red.” – Mr Anderson

Year 13 will now analyse the various theatrical elements of the production and evaluate its effectiveness in preparation for Section A of their written exam in summer.

Year 11 Information Evening

We hosted our annual Year 11 Information this week to help student prepare for the most important year in their high school career. We provided study tips, important dates for diaries, and also gave advice on how to navigate the coming months.

If you need any information or advice, please contact the school.

Attendance Champions!

Last week, we launched our new attendance improvement competition. Having listened to student voice, we learned that a competition would be motivating for students.

Here’s a photo of the Week 1 Year 8 winners in Miss Bailey’s class!

On a roll

The sixth form netball team played in their first competitive game in the East Lancashire Colleges league against DACA last Wednesday.

This week, the team won! Their campaign is off to an unbeaten start with one draw and one win in the East Lancashire Colleges Netball League. Super teamwork displayed – keep up the great work!

Bake sale success

This week, the PE Faculty held tuck stalls at breaktime, followed by a bake sale on Friday as part of our Cash For Kids campaign. Thanks to the generosity of students and their families, we have raised nearly £800!

All the money we raise we keep, plus we could win an extra £5,000, £2,500 or £1,500 if we’re in the top three fundraising groups, plus all other groups still get £500 if we raise £1,500!

We are a little way off our target, but there is still time to support with the campaign ending on Monday, 20th October!

Thank you to the PE Faculty for your help this week.\
