Haslingden High School and Sixth Form Weekly Round Up

Year 12 discover their key skills

Our new Year 12s had their first Future Leaders PSHE lesson this week, where Mr Anderson (Head of the Future Leaders programme) set the groups off with the Myers-Briggs test to see where their strengths lie.

The Future Leaders programme is open to all Year 12 students and provides them with the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to take their next steps in life.

Drawing Competition winner!

Year 10 GCSE Art student, Amber, has won the Haslingden Museum on the Move sketching competition.

Entrants were encouraged to sketch historic shopfronts and buildings within Haslingden town centre.

Amber’s sketch depicts the bottom of Deardengate, looking onto former bank (now Spectrum One).

The image shows great depth and is a combination of biro and pencil.

Well done, Amber!

Commendation Assemblies

It was time for the greatly anticipated Commendation Assemblies this week.

Year 8–11 students spent Period 1 celebrating the achievements of their peers. Commendation Assemblies recognise and encourage positive successes across every subject area. Students chosen by their teachers were awarded a badge to proudly display on their blazer.

At HHS, we celebrate every success, big or small. Commendation Assemblies are just one of the many ways we recognise and reward our students’ efforts.

First time in Food Tech

Miss Bleasdale’s Year 7 class had their very first Food Tech class this week. The group made flapjacks, following a recipe to create the delicious treat.

Miss Bleasdale was very impressed with their ability to work independently and was happy to see so many smiling faces as they were busy in the kitchen.

We hope parents and carers got to try the bakes, too!

Year 7 Book Club start their first chapter

The Library holds a Book Club for students who wish to come together to share their love for reading.

“It was a really wonderful, articulate, humorous group of avid readers at the first Year 7 Book Club of the academic year, sharing a love of biscuits and books!” said Mrs Choudry.

Book Club is afterschool on the first Monday of every month for Year 9 10 and 11, the first Tuesday of the month for Year 8s, and the first Wednesday of the month for Year 7s.

Students can ask their Form Tutor for more information.

Money in the bank for DT Club

Mr Charles holds a DT Club for Year 7s every Thursday afterschool. They have started the year by making wooden piggie banks, using sanders, saws, and paint under the supervision of Mr Charles and Mr Greenwood.

It was great to see such a large turnout for Week 2 of term!

In their DNA

Mrs Dickinson’s Year 11 Biology class were experimenting with DNA this week, as the class explored what happens when you mix strawberries with washing up liquid!

In the picture below you can see a cloud in the mixture – which is the DNA of a strawberry!

Another interesting and insightful week of learning!
