Literature Festival, Future Leaders, and future students!

It has been a special week as we have welcomed our future Year 7s, awarded our Year 12s with their Future Leaders qualification, and celebrated all things books!
Welcome to big school
On Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Year 6 classes to our school for taster sessions. It was a great opportunity for pupils to meet their future form groups and connect with some of the teachers who will be guiding them on the next stage of their educational journey from September.
Transitioning to secondary school is a big step, and these introduction days play a big role in easing nerves and ensuring students feel informed, supported, and confident about what lies ahead.
That evening, we also welcomed parents for an Information Evening. This was an opportunity to learn more about the transition process and collect their child’s uniform in preparation for September.
We hope all the students had a fantastic day, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the next cohort on Tuesday!

Reading, bookmark making, and author workshops
We hosted our annual LitFest this week. The festival aims to encourage students to explore new genres and pick up tips on how to improve their own writing. It’s a very inspirational and fun week for book-loving students!
Writer and poet Nathan Parker offered our students an inspirational writing workshop after school. He spoke about character development and also held a quick-fire poem activity.
Laura Barsley from Laura’s Imagination Station held a bespoke Book Fair with Usborne Books! She also held a writing workshop with one of our Year 7 classes on creating characters in narrative writing.
We welcomed Jixie Dye into one of our English classes to discuss her experiences as an author. She also shared her writing talents with the class, discussing sentence structure and descriptive writing. Award-winning Bali Rai spoke about the experiences that have inspired him to write about real people’s lives.
We also held a bake sale for charity, Read for Good, who bring books to children in UK hospitals. We have raised over £10,000 for them over the years of supporting them!
Well done to the Library Team for organising such educational and interactive activities for our students.

The end of an era for our Future Leaders
On Friday, we held a commendation assembly for this year’s cohort of Future Leaders – an additional ASDAN qualification Year 12s have the opportunity to participate in. Over the past year, students have had leadership and confidence mentoring sessions and the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practice by supporting local clubs, groups, or also helping out with tasks in high school.
This unique qualification builds successful learners and provides them with the skills that will make them stand out in their post-18 study or when looking for jobs in the future.

Year 9 Boys drop the neat with new DJ kit
There was a serious buzz in the Music Faculty today as three Year 9 students took centre stage (literally!) using our brand new DJ equipment.
Jack, Jude, and Shayaan did a fantastic job of explaining how the kit works, demonstrating beatmatching, EQ controls, and how to use effects like filters and loops to shape the sound.
The DJ kit is a new addition to the department and we can’t wait to see which students step up next to show what they can do.

A colourful day out
A group of Year 7 girls represented Haslingden High School at the 2025 Colour Dash at Marl Pits, Rawtenstall. The students took part to help raise money for mental health charities and had a great time running through the colourful clouds.
Well done!

Smiles aplenty
A photographer visited us this week to take photos of our wonderful classes for our website. Science staged an impressive experiment, History looked at war artefacts, Dance put on a show, and Art showed off their latest pieces.

That’s all for this week! Stay tuned for our next update.
