World Book Day celebrated in cake

A SCHOOL library resembled the food technology department when 23 incredible decorated cakes were brought into school for World Book Day on May 6.

Haslingden High School students were invited to get baking and decorating to celebrate their love of reading.

Inspiration included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mr Men, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and more.

Librarian Zainab Khattak said: “There were 23 entries and they were all fantastic. The standard was so impressive that we decided to award a prize per year group.

“Well done to everyone who took part. They blew the judges away with their efforts. Thank you also to our students from Tor View for getting involved.”

Abigail Gibson created the Mad Hatter’s hat from Alice in Wonderland and her entry was picked as the best in Year 8.

She said: “My mum made the four sponges and I made everything else out of fondant icing.

“I love baking with my aunt and my mum; it is something that I have always loved doing.”

Abigail is also an avid reader, but said she lost her love of reading at her previous high school. However, since switching schools she said is now more settled and it has returned.

She said: “I have read two books so far now it is back, because they were relatable. Coming here is the best thing to ever happen.”

As well as rabbit ears, a bow and orange fondant hair, she also made a green feather for her purple hat cake.

Isolde Stuart-Booth created a cake based on Hunger Games and was third in the keenly contested Year 7 competition.

She said: “We started making the cake on Saturday and finished it on the Wednesday, in time for the competition on the Thursday.

“It was based on all the Hunger Games books, including the prequel and I have seen all the films and read all the books.”

She created white roses from petal paste to represent President Snow, some had red on them, and she also created the Mocking Jay symbol pin.

Winners – Year 7 Bethany Lawton; Year 8 Abigail Gibson; Year 9 Ciara Hayhurst; Year 11 Isobel Wright; no entries in Year 10.
