Haslingden High students in debating final

STUDENTS from Haslingden High School will be taking on Lancashire’s top talkers in The Great Lancashire Debate Final.

Next Thursday November 21, Year 9 students Roisin Ikin, Sophie Metcalf, Mia Tyborczyk and Phoebe Shaw will attend the final at County Hall in Preston.

High School students were tasked to consider the topic – how do you predict life will be different in another 50 years’ time? Tell us about a change which you think should be made today and how it will benefit Lancashire over the next 50 years.

Roisin, who will take the lead and begin the students’ five-minute presentation, said: “We each chose our own topic to develop based on the subject.

“I am discussing drug rates and how drugs are affecting young people and also talking about rape.

“Mia is explaining the learning aspect of school, looking at results and statistics and Phoebe is very sporty and so is looking at obesity and food.”

Sophie said: “I will be discussing mental health in schools and we will be giving everyone about a minute to put their points across before Mia does the round up at the end.”

The students had a week to put their presentation together and met at lunchtimes and after school to brainstorm and plan.

Sophie said it had been stressful, but also fun.

Roisin added: “I thought it would be fun to do this and it will look good on my CV.”

Lots of students put themselves forward to enter the competition and Roisin said they were chosen at random.
