AFTER scoring a hat-trick, which helped her U14s school side win the Lancashire Cup, student Darcie Dixon took a tumble and heard her wrist snap.
Although she was immediately taken off the pitch at Darwen Football Club, Haslingden High School student Darcie, 14, stayed to see her team win against Broughton High School, collected her medal and was with the team to lift the cup.
Her first goal came after centre-back Senaiya Knill kicked a long ball to her and she took a shot which went just over the goalie’s hands and landed in to top of corner of the net.
Right Winger Darcie said: “The next one was technical and I turned the ball back and then passed two players and scored.
“The third was a penalty and I again hit it to the top of the net and the goalie didn’t jump high enough.”
By half-time, Haslingden High were 3-0 up. Then, 10 minutes into the second half, Darcie was chasing the ball when she tripped over the feet of a Broughton player.
She said: “As I went down, I heard a snap and my wrist started to swell.”
Haslingden’s Ellie Collinson made it four for Haslingden and then Broughton got a couple of goals back before Miriam Kirkham sealed the win at 5-2.
After the cup was awarded and they had all been presented with their medals, Darcie was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, but facing a seven-hour wait, she booked into Burnley General Hospital where an x-ray confirmed a fracture to her left wrist.
The following day she was back in school complete with cast and getting her friends to sign it.
She will now have four weeks away from football and is currently awaiting the result of trials for Blackburn Rovers Academy.
The U14s team were delighted to end their footballing season on a high.
