Smashing eggs and cracking codes

From engineering to coding, we have had a fantastic week across the board. Here’s what has been going on…

Eggcellent British Science Week!

Science Club have had a cracking time celebrating British Science Week. The club decided to test their engineering skills by designing protective armour for an egg before dropping it from a height.

The group wrapped their eggs in paper, plastic, and bubble wrap, then dropped them from one, two, and three metre heights.

The winner was ‘Scrambled’, who made it through all three rounds, even the three metre distance, which was out of the window!

Millee has been awarded a scholarship in America

Millee, Year 13, has been offered a scholarship with Augustana University in South Dakota.

Millee is an excellent runner and has been offered a place on The Vikings running team alongside her studies.

Augustana is ranked highly in academics and athletics, and will set Millee up for a successful career in the sporting world.

Coding in MEGA Hub

Year 10 attended this term’s MEGA Hub at ACROSS College, where they learnt about coding.

The MEGA (Motivated, Educated, Generation with Ambition) Hubs are designed to prepare the next generation of AI, cloud, computing, and cybersecurity engineers.

Well done to the HHS team!

Testing their memory through drama

Mr Earle’s Year 8 English class have been working on remembering the structure of the novel they are studying, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. To aid their memory and understanding, they were working on freeze frames for each major scene.

Trip to the markets

A group of Year 12 and 13 students went on a short trip down the road to Haslingden Markets this afternoon.

They met with videographer Darren, who owns Dreamscope TV and has worked on the production of shows like Most Haunted.

The group learned about filming while also experiencing what a ‘content day’ looks like from a marketing perspective.

Haslingden Sixth Form provides ample and unique opportunities for work experience in real-life settings to help broaden perspectives for future careers.

Youth Parliament Elections

During form time this week, students explored the manifesto pledges from local candidates standing in the Hyndburn, Ribble Valley & Rossendale UK Youth Parliament elections.

Today, they had the opportunity to vote, experiencing the democratic process first-hand. Activities like this help raise awareness of local issues, encourage students to share their views, and inspire young people to become active, informed citizens.

The Golden Gig is just around the corner

Next Thursday (19th March), we will be welcoming back former students to celebrate Haslingden High School’s 50th anniversary with us.

Live performances from past and present students, a bar stocked with Northern Whisper Beer, and a food truck will entertain our guests.
