Half term heroes

It’s officially the end of February Half Term! Here’s what has been happening this week…

Experiencing Poetry Live

A group of Year 10 students attended a Poetry Live conference this week, hosted by Simon Armitage – one of Britain’s greatest poets.

The conference aims to support students with the poetry element of their GCSE English exam – focusing on how to deal with an unseen poem and how to compare poems.

We hope our students took a lot away from this session.

Going HOME

Year 11 German had a great study morning at Manchester’s HOME Cinema this week.

They watched the German film Phoenix and joined an in-depth discussion on the themes of the film afterwards.

The students said it wasgreat to immerse themselves in German for an hour and a half!

Wellbeing Wednesday

Each term, staff enjoy a ‘wellbeing hour’ as a thank you for all of their hard work.

They can do whatever they please with this hour, go for a walk, take part in a team sport, go for a coffee, or head home for the day.

Mrs Smithson hosted a block printing session, where staff brought along an item of clothing or an accessory to get creative with.

Thank you for hosting the session!

Exploring book themes in a different way

Mr Earle’s Year 7 English class have been exploring characters and themes from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

The group created cardboard scenes and redesigned the book’s front cover, having carefully thought about the important moments in the book.

Great work.

Spreading the love

The Sixth Form Leadership led a number of Valentine’s-themed activities, including:

  • Chocolate rose delivery service, accompanied by a personal note from the sender.
  • ‘Name the teddy’ competition (he’s named Eddie!).
  • Wall of hearts in Mrs Kauser’s room – featuring messages on something/someone they love.

It was lovely to see everyone going out of their way to spread the love.

Success on the bounce

Ruby, Antonia and Megan are heading to the British Schools Gymnastics Association (BSGA) National Trampoline Finals in March!

They successfully booked themselves a place last weekend at the Northern Zonals at The King’s School, Macclesfield.

Megan came in first place in her category, and the team qualified together for the next round.

We wish them all the best of luck.

Ramadan Kareem

A number of students supported Ms Chourdry’s assembly on Ramadan this week.

The educational assembly shared the experiences of people participating in Ramadan, its importance to the faith, and how to respect and support someone who is fasting.

The group did amazingly well presenting, and enjoyed it so much they volunteered to help next year!

Signed book from top author

In conversation with the Young Adult genre author Cynthia Murphy, who we are hoping will visit us for this year’s HHS LitFest, Issy’s love of Cynthia’s books was mentioned.

Issy is one of the most voracious readers in school and loves a dark thriller.

She was taken aback when Cynthia kindly sent a signed copy of her latest book, especially for Issy, with a note of encouragement and some badges, bookmarks, and other goodies!
