We met Luke ‘The Nuke’ and Ella Toone!

We’re back in the swing of things after the October half-term, and we have had trips and important lessons aplenty!

Meeting celebs at the Trafford Centre

Year 12 and 13 students from Haslingden Sixth Form went on a trip to the Trafford Centre this week.

The trip was intended to be an icebreaker for the year groups and a chance for them to get to know each other at the start of the year. Each year, we listen to student voice and put on extracurricular activities that are tailored to their preferences.

Students had a great time perusing the shops and food halls. Some students even bumped into darts player Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler and England Lioness Ella Toone!

Remembrance Assemblies

Every year, the Humanities Faculty host Remembrance Assemblies to encourage students to take a moment to pause and reflect.

Mr Bacon held the assembly and themed it on choice. To remember is not something we have to do; it’s a choice. Participating in that choice is a part of our country’s dedication to honouring past sacrifices and developing a deeper understanding of the devastating effects of conflict, encouraging a renewed commitment to peace.

Poppy sales will be occurring during breaktime until 11th November.

Cross-country champions

The Rossendale Schools Partnership help a cross-country competition for schools across the valley at Marl Pits on Thursday.

Notable performances included:

  • Ivy Pilkington – won the Year 8 and 9 race and became Rossendale Champion
  • Kobi Derbyshire – Year 7 boys’ 2nd place
  • Erin Fisher – Year 7 girls’ 2nd place
  • Amber Webster – Year 7 girls’ 3rd place
  • Charlie Dobson – Year 8/9 boys’ 2nd place

How to save a life

As part of PHSEE lessons, which are an essential part of the curriculum and teach key life skills beyond what is taught in the classroom, Year 9 had the opportunity to learn how to deliver First Aid.

Mr Albiston and Mrs Yates led the sessions, teaching students about the importance of acting quickly to save lives.

The groups got to practice the recovery position and CPR on our casualty dummies.

We hope the students took a lot from these sessions, and though we hope they will never have to apply their learnings, we hope they now feel prepared.

Thinking about the future

Mrs Finney led a workshop for Year 10s on how to prepare for their next steps. At this age, many will be thinking about getting a part-time job, or applying to sixth form or college.

The session taught students how to make their CV stand out from the crowd, how to perform well in interviews, and how to look for opportunities.

These sorts of sessions are a key part of our curriculum, as we are dedicated to ensuring our students feel prepared for life beyond education.
