Christmas is just around the corner

With Christmas just around the corner, our students have been preparing for the festive season by taking part in shows, donating to charity, and creating clay sculptures…

Christmas clay creations

Clay Club has been getting in the festive spirit with their latest creations. The group, which meets every Tuesday after school, sculpt and decorates pieces of art which they get to take home once completed.

The art of clay requires patience, attention to detail, and, most importantly, the ability to be creative.

More information about clubs can be found here, or students can ask their form tutor.

The success of The Witches

This year, the Drama department was in charge of the school show and chose The Witches.

Miss Anthony and Mrs Brady took on the project, creating a wonderfully magical adventure for three sold-out audiences.

The show was so popular with students this year that we had to have two alternating casts. Both of which brought the show to life with the utmost professionalism and exceptional talent.

We would like to share a special thank you to:

Coffee morning success

On Monday, a group of Year 10 students organised a coffee morning as part of their ASDAN qualification.

They were tasked with organising an event from start to finish – from creating a menu, sending out invites, organising a prep station, taking orders, and preparing and serving the food.

They did an outstanding job and demonstrated impressive professionalism from start to finish.

Shaping the curriculum

Following the success of our first two cohorts of PHSE Ambassadors in lower and upper school, Mrs Yates invited a group of Year 13 students to share their thoughts on PSHE lessons.

The group discussed the different topics they covered and whether they are relevant to their age group, the resources they used and their effectiveness, and also whether diversity needs to be represented to a higher degree.

They provided a lot of useful insight, which Mrs Yates will take on board to improve PSHE for the next cohort.

For their honesty and time, Mrs Yates rewarded them with a big box of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and hot chocolate.

Last chance to help

The deadline for donations for our Christmas Hamper campaign is Monday, so if you are heading to the shops this weekend and can pop an extra item or two in your trolly, we would be very grateful.

We are still looking for recipients for hampers, so please email lsouthee@haslingdenhigh.com and/or eedyvean@haslingdenhigh.com

The heat is on

We have just one week to go until the Haslingden Sixth Form University Challenge!

In this week’s quarter finals, Law beat Film Studies, and History beat English.

The semi-finals will occur on Tuesday next week, where Law, History, Biology and Music will go head-to-head to secure a spot in the final next Friday.

Christmas in other countries

An important part of learning a language is also learning about culture and traditions. This week in German classes, students have been learning about Nikolaus.

St Nikolaus Day is celebrated in Germany and some other European countries on December 6th.

Children leave their shoes outside their door and are up to find that Nikolaus has filled them with chocolates and sweets.

In class, the students pretended to  ‘go to sleep’, leaving a shoe on their desk. When they ‘woke’,  they saw that Nikolaus had left sweets!

They also enjoyed singing the traditional German Nikolautag song: ‘Laßt uns froh und munter sein’.

Don’t miss out!

With the end of term just around the corner, we want to make sure every single student is able to take part in the fun and festive activities we have planned. To do this, we need parent/carers’ help to promote positive attendance. If you need support with your child’s attendance, please contact the school.
