Design Technology Overview 2018-19

The Design & Technology Faculty has very good specialist rooms, which consist of two
workshops, one food practical room, one graphics/CAD/CAM room and two dedicated
computer rooms, two laser cutters and a 3D printer.

The faculty offers a GCSE Design & Technology array of examination subjects in both KS4 and
KS5. At KS4 GCSEs are offered in Food Preparation and Nutrition. At post 16 the faculty has
had a strong tradition in A Level product design and health & social care. Level 2 Cambridge
National in Health and Social Care is also offered.

In KS3 the students are taught in a carousel system of approximately nine or ten week
rotations covering the disciplines of systems, food preparation and nutrition, graphic
products and resistant materials. All students are assessed in each rotation and given
feedback on their academic progress.

All students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra curricular clubs and
activities. The faculty runs extensive after-school clubs and holiday sessions to support
examination success. Students from Haslingden High School regularly take part in in the
prestigious Rotary Club Technology Tournament, competing against a large number of other
schools and colleges. We have had considerable success in these events at all key stages,
winning 13 awards over recent years.
