Reading

Reading for just twenty minutes per day will expose a child to 1,800,000 words per year. By secondary school, most students will have mastered word recognition but all students need to continue to build their stamina and fluency through the regular practice of reading so, like any other skill, it becomes increasingly automatic. At Haslingden High School and Sixth Form, students benefit from a school culture that provides regular opportunities to read and prioritises supporting students to access academic texts in all of their subjects. We believe that we must also work together to ensure that those opportunities are reinforced and extended at home.
