Rationale

Business activities are part of our daily lives. Business affects all of us as we learn, work, spend, travel, save and play. It influences jobs, the economy, incomes, and opportunities for personal business and enterprise. Business studies provides students with transferable skills which can be used in most future programmes of study or careers. It enables them to understand the world of work, to become problem-solvers, to engage in data analysis, to gain leadership skills and skills of collaboration and communication.

GCSE Rationale

Through studying our qualifications students will become successful learners. They will take part in an ambitious, inclusive curriculum, which has a diverse range of experiences through the different types of topics taught. The marking of the end of topic tests is supportive, and there are opportunities for CTG to be acted upon. As students see their improvement they can take an active role in the partnership of developing their learning. There are many opportunities to make value judgments around ethical issues such as the impact of globalisation, how businesses affect their environments and the treatment of employees.

Aims of the Business Studies course

The aims of this qualification are to enable students to:

know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society
apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts
develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems
develop as effective and independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
use an enquiring, critical approach to make informed judgements • investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of business
develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data.

Year 12 & 13 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate

Through studying this qualification students will become successful learners.
