Trip to our capital, food stalls, and roadshows – it has been a very busy week!
Careers focus
This week, we hosted two roadshows to help our students see what jobs are out there!
First, we welcomed the BBC Bitesize Careers Tour, with some special guests…
- Holly Watson, Marketing Manager at Co-op Live
- Nishma Hindocha, BBC Lancashire Producer
- Olly Wallwork, The University of Manchester Technician
- Joel Mitchell, BBC Presenter
They spoke about their different careers and gave advice to students on how to follow their passions!
And we also welcomed BAE Systems, Inc., Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for the BAE Roadshow, where students got to make their own AI music video and meet Fluffy, to robotic dog!
It’s been a very interesting week, and the students have loved spending time with our guests.
Trip down south
Our sixth form Law students went on a quick trip to London this week. They visited the Supreme Court for a tour and an impromptu mock trial where students had to convince a five-strong panel of student justices of the guilt or innocence of a defendant in a murder case, and got to sit in on a live appeal case hearing.
They also took part in a scary Jack the Ripper walking tour and visited the Jack the Ripper museum.
Later, they visited The Royal Courts of Justice, Lincoln’s Inn and watched a live witness testimony in a real murder case at The Old Bailey.
Followed by a much-enjoyed performance of Wicked at the Apollo Theatre!
They also took part in a mock trial at The Royal Courts of Justice, where students played the parts of witnesses, barristers, judge and jury.
In the Houses of Parliament, they watched the day’s business in the Commons and Lords from the public gallery and took part in a Q&A session with Sarah Smith, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden.
The students showed impeccable independence and responsibility through the trip and were a credit to the school.
Culture Day
On Wednesday in sixth form, we celebrated equality and diversity by encouraging students to come in traditional dress from their culture.
A group of students also led a food stall to help raise money for our Cash For Kids campaign!
We believe that students achieve their very best when they feel happy, safe, and respected, and that’s why community is woven into everything we do here
Traitors lurking
Year 13 Psychology students tested out their own version of BBC’s Traitors as they were secretly assigned the role of ‘faithful’ or ‘traitor’ in class. They then completed a treasure hunt where they could only get the next clue if they got the answer to a psychology question correct.
The traitor’s job was to discreetly sabotage their team by giving incorrect answers, slowing their team down, or leading them to the wrong place in the treasure hunt. The faithfuls were working hard to get as many answers as possible correct in the fastest time. At the round table vote, one group faithfuls identified two of the three traitors. While in another group, the traitors emerged victorious, with one of them going completely under the radar with no votes from the faithfuls!
Sentence stealers
Year 8 enjoyed a ‘Sentence Stealer’ activity in French. They were working on having brilliant pronunciation, and this activity certainly helped motivate them to speak in a good French accent.
Gold reader
Freya has achieved GOLD in Go For Gold and been rewarded with a £20 voucher. Freya has read and reviewed 30 books to achieve uber-reader status!
Important PSHEE
We have been leading a series of workshops by external agencies in PSHEE over the last couple of weeks to teach students about important life topics. This week, Jodie from Be Free delivered a lesson on domestic abuse awareness, teaching students about the signs and what to do if you or someone else needs help.
Ready for winter
Crochet Club have been busy adding the finishing touches to this term’s project. They have been making hats and headbands to keep them warm in the winter!
