Olivia Newbitt was first in the 100m sprint and second in the 1,500m despite only running that distance once before, while Leah Bury was first in the 200m and Darcey Smith was first in the 300m.
The students also came first in the four by 100m relay, with Leah and Olivia joined by Connie Wall and TJ Golby Thomson.
Olivia, 12, who is also a member of Bury Athletics Club, said: “I won my heat for the 100m and then in the final I won by a bit and got a PB [Personal Best].
“The 1,500 race was very hard and I didn’t know how to pace it. The first runner was a long-distance runner and on the last lap she was about 100m ahead of me – I tried to keep a sprint for the end and I was on the final straight as she had just finished.”
Leah, 12, said: “I was first in my heat and was very happy when I won the final. I have been going to Rossendale Harriers for a couple of months and I also ran a lot before I joined the Harriers.”
Although coming second in her 300m heat, Darcey went on to win the final. She said: “In my heat, I was winning, but then I slowed down over the last 100m, but that prepared me for the final so when I got to the last 100m in the final I just sprinted.”
Darcey, who had never run the distance before and is not a member of an athletics club, had just trained in school, but she is now considering joining a club.
The students said some people had struggled a bit with the baton in the relay as they needed more practice, but Olivia was on the last leg and kept a sprint to make sure the school won.
The school’s boys’ team were second. Rossendale Schools Sports Partnership organised the event.
