March 2020: Maths brains put to test in national challenge

MATHEMATICIANS put their knowledge to the test at Haslingden High School and two did so well they earned a place in the next round of the challenge.

Students from Years 9, 10 and 11, all faced a gruelling set of questions as part of the UK Mathematics Trust Challenge.

Hussain Shah, 16, not only won Best in Year but also Best in School and along with Charlie Riley, 15 and also in Year 11, he won a place in the Pink Kangaroo Competition.

Across the board, students performed excellently and several students gained bronze, silver and gold certificates.

Hussain was surprised that he did so well as he admitted he had to guess some of the answers.

He added: “Maths is something that I am good at but there are a lot that are better at the subject than me.”

Charlie said: “I am all right at maths but I ran out of time in the challenge and so I just guessed some of the questions.”

Best in Year 9 was Willow Camps and Best in Year 10 was Daisy Simpson.
