SKIERS from Haslingden High School won the British Schools Indoor Ski Championships at the Chill Factore, Stretford,
Eilidh Aindow, 15, Hannah Wilson, 13, and 12-years-old Georgia Crabtree and Erin Mellish skied their way to the Under 18s senior trophy and Eilidh was third in the individual competition.
Eilidh and Erin attend the 2K Performance Ski Club at The Hill – home of Ski Rossendale, every Thursday for two hours and Eilidh also skis in Scotland.
Eilidh said: “I was quite nervous racing because there were a lot of people there from all over the UK and in the U18s there were also a lot of mixed team entries.”
The fastest three times posted by the four members of each team counted towards their final score.
Hannah said: “I lost one of my sticks at the top before I set off but I still managed to complete the slalom course.”
Erin said she was really nervous because although she has been annually skiing on snow since she was four, she had not done much slalom.
She said: “I have only been practising for six weeks at The Hill. We do 45 minutes going down the slope and then there are two identical slalom courses set up when we compete against each other.”
Eilidh, Hannah and Erin arranged visits to the Chill Factore in advance of the competition so they were prepared for the competition.
Erin added: “I don’t get to ski on snow often and you go down much faster in the slalom than on a dry ski slope.
“I didn’t think we would win because there were loads of other teams from all over the UK in the competition.”
The school’s boys’ team of Adam Griffin, Jonathan Calvert, Matthew Marriott and Oliver Harwood were second and Adam came fifth overall. Also competing as individuals were Will Harding and Jeremy Nuttall.
