May 2019: Footballers set sights on county glory

Our Year 7 footballers were victorious in the Rossendale Cup and will now go on to complete for the Lancashire Cup!

The team will contest the final of the 7-a-side competition on Monday May 20 at St Bede’s High School, Blackburn.

Also through to the final are teams from Archbishop Temple School, Preston, Morecambe High School and St Mary’s Catholic Academy, Blackpool.

Last week the Year 7s notched up success at Alder Grange School, Rawtenstall, when as a 9-a-side team they beat Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School to get through to the final against Alder Grange, which they won 5:2 with midfielder David Trueman, 12, scoring a hat-trick.

He said: “I play for two teams – Rossendale Valley, who I have played for since I was in reception, and in the last few months I have started playing for Bacup Borough.

“I scored the first goal in the final, then got the third and finally scored the team’s fifth goal and was then substituted with 10 minutes to go.

“I train three times a week and play matches on Saturdays and Sundays.

Finley Green, 12, started playing football for Rossendale Valley when he as four and went on to play for a number of teams including some in Burnley. He has been with Bacup Borough for the last two and a half years.

The striker said: “I also enjoy mountain biking so I only play matches that are on a Sunday.”

They will both be in the 7-a-side team in the final next week.
