THREE of our students are celebrating being European champions with their cheerleading teams.
Laura Hartland, Emma Smith and Georgia Crowther are members of the Clarets Cheer and Dance group that qualified for the European Championships in the Netherlands.
Sixth Form student, Laura, 17, and her team of 15 were up against three German teams but their 2 minute 30 seconds routine won gold.
Laura has been cheerleading since she was nine and joined the Burnley squad two years ago.
She said: “Our routine was quite complicated and we were up against some strong opposition. The Senior Urban Cheer is a combination of cheerleading and street dance.
“We got sponsorship and held lots of different fundraisers to raise the money for the trip.
“I have always liked dancing and got into cheerleading through a friend.”
Emma and Georgia won the Junior Cheerleading gold and Emma was also in the team that won Junior Urban Cheer.
Emma said: “There were 23 members and we were against six other teams in the competition. We did stunts, lifts and also dancing, jumps and tumbling.”
Emma has been involved with cheerleading since Year 5, whilst Georgia joined in Year 7.
