CROSS country runner Dominic Mitton showed his prowess when he beat a field of some 200 Year 7 runners to first place.
Rossendale Schools Cross Country Championships were held at Marl Pits in Rawtenstall when runners had to navigate a 2k course over muddy rugby pitches and hills.
Dominic, 11, is a student at Haslingden High School and a member of Rossendale Harriers and so knew to pace himself.
He said: “When the race started lots of the runners went off really quickly but I just kept to a steady pace. Then when they started to get slower I went past them and when I got near to the end I still had a sprint left.
“I do a lot of running because it keeps me fit and it gives me things to do outside of school.
“I have been a member of Rossendale Harriers for a year and I came second last year in a Red Rose cross country event.”
