BIATHLETES from Haslingden High School must now wait to find out if their times have secured places in a national competition in March.
Several pupils took part in the North West Biathlon Championships in Leigh Sports Village.
The girls’ under 12s team of Ruby Farrell, Charlotte Mounfield and Hannah Wilson were second overall as was the under 13s team of Emily Nuttall, Beth Hartwell and Sienna Giomarelli, who were also the fastest school team.
Although Sienna is in Year 7, she has an early birthday in September and so had to compete with the under 13s.
This meant she had to swim 100m not 50m and run 1,600m not 800m.
Ben Wilson, 12, is no stranger to biathlons having completed his first while still a pupil at Broadway Primary School and finished sixth.
He said: “If we get to go to London again it will be the third time I have been in the national final.”
Also finishing in fifth place was Year 7 Adam Fern, Year 8 Max Constant, Year 9 Ashley Jolly and Year 10 student Harvey Brockenshaw.
Several of the students then went on to take part in the Rossendale Schools Biathlon at Accrington Academy the following day.
PE teacher Erika Wilson said: “I would like to say ‘well done’ to all our students and fingers crossed that they manage to get qualifying places for the British Biathlon finals in London in March.
“We will not find out until just before Christmas if their times have earned them a place, it all depends on the times posted by other athletes from all over Great Britain.
“Sienna was very nervous because she had to swim and run double the distance of all the other students in her year group. We are very proud of her.”
