July 2016: Going for gold in Lancashire School Games

Duathlon

THREE students from Haslingden High School proved they were the best in Lancashire when they competed in a duathlon event.

Ashlea Jolly, 13, competed in the individual competition at the Lancashire School Games while 14-year-olds Minnie Penwill and Sofia Riley took part in the team race.

They had to run 1,700m then cycle 5km and finish off by running a further 800m.

All won their places at the final at Stanley Park in Blackpool after competing at the district competition at Seedhill in Nelson.

Ashlea said: “The first run was fine as was the bike ride but the last run was horrible, I was just so tired.

“I never expected to win because I was competing in the under 15s class and all the other competitors were older than me.”

Minnie competed the running races in the team event while Sofia completed the bike ride.

Minnie said: “When I finished the first run I was quite tired but I was able to recover while Sofia was riding the bike so I felt fine before I had to run again.

“On the last lap we were first at the start and I managed to maintain that right to the end.”
