June 2015: Musical students blow their own trumpets

MUSICIANS from Haslingden High School have good reason to blow their own ‘trumpet’.

Louise Smith, 14, took her practical music exam going straight in at Grade 2 on the baritone and got a distinction.

Ellie Ryan, 11, was also taking her first music exam Grade 1 flute and passed with distinction, while 14-year-old Bethan Nelson passed her Grade 4 practical on the flute.

Louise said: “I also play other instruments, the clarinet and the piano and have taken exams in them before. It was the best I have ever done in an exam although I did feel nervous.”

Ellie also plays the piano but has never had her ability tested before. “It was really good,” she said. “I thought I was only going to get a pass. My mum and dad are really proud.”

Bethan has been playing the flute since Year 4 at Britannia Primary School.

“I was really nervous,” she admitted.

Louise plays in the school brass and wind bands and with Rossendale Valley Sounds. Ellie and Bethan both play in the school wind band.
